"Jimmy Page was a great technical guitarist"

I'll agree to differ. Technically, Page was often all over the place. What he is/was is a great composer, producer and leader. Some of his solos are shockingly out of time or out of tune. Sure WHO people will mention "Stairway..." as a great solo, but that was melded from 3 to 4 different takes, cos he kept getting it wrong. Even he's admitted that.

But he was influential.Even though he stole a lot from BERT JANSCH and HUBERT SUMLIN.

Great to see a rare Jason Falkner mention :). One of my absolute heroes still, and not just on the guitar.

I love jangly, Roger McGuinn sounded great

Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
You're right there Bamber but there is something about flanged jangly guitar that annoys me intensely.
I get the same feeling when I hear The Edge.

Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
Whatever about the rest of the world, for me it's Roddy Frame, Edwyn Collins, David Byrne and Robert Smith.

DLR had tons of charisma that Sammy sadly lacked

Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
Yes. Chuck Berry. I can't believe I left him off my list.

Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
Chuck Berry. The olde perv. Cited by Keith Richards and Angus Young.

Jimi Hendrix. Cited by just about every guitarist, albeit for different reasons.

And note, Steve Hackett and Harvey Mandel were doing two-handed fret tapping WAY before Eddie Van Halen. Just not in tiger-stripe pants.

I'll have to give it a whirl, as VH completely passed me by.

The whole Fair Warning album is actually quite remarkable.

I listened to it from start to finish in the car the other day, and would say that it is almost unique in it's style, texture and kind of dark air throughout. It sounds like no other band, is almost 'genre-less', and stands the test of time unbelievably well.

Just shows how far above the 'ordinary' Sunset Strip bands VH were in their heyday.

Unchained is an exquisite track

zebthecat 10:34 Mon Sep 29
Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
The first album is so good. Running with the Devil is just such a good song to start a band's album career.

Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
He might mean Chet Atkins (or Ginger Baker - who knows?).

zebthecat 10:21 Mon Sep 29
Re: Most INFLUENTIAL guitarists?
>Frank Zappa though, as a giant musical intellect, is in a league of his own.

I'd put Tim Smith pretty close mind (not the guitar playing though)
